5 Important Considerations for Safe and Effective Concrete Drilling
On many projects, many of performing works related to concrete drilling are assigned to trained experts. However, as a project owner or project manager, you need to inspect the entire process and ensure safety precautions are underway.
Regardless of who is doing the drilling, here are 5 safety tips and operating guidelines for concrete drilling.
1. Select the Right Drill for The Task
Concrete core drills come in two categories — handheld and units mounted on heavy-duty rigs or stands. If the hole you are looking to drill is small, a handheld drill would be the better choice. However, if the hole is large — typically more than three inches in diameter — it is best to use a rig mounted unit. Ensure you have chosen the right drill for your particular job.
2. Select the Right Drill Motor Option
These come in three power formats. The drill motor could be electric, hydraulic or air. Each of these has its own advantages and disadvantages. However, the choice you make depends on two factors. The first is the type of power source available on your work site. if your jobs have a stable power source, an electric drill would be a reasonable choice for you. Ensure that you make considerations for safety and pay attention to the noise level and electrical safety protocols on your work site.
3. Select the Right Stand Attachment
In some instances, concrete drilling is done under a horizontal surface. However, this task often needs working on angulated and vertical surfaces. In every situation, you will need a specific type of attachment for the stand-mounted drills. The vacuum stand is suitable for a flat and slightly angulated surface. It relies on suction to remain firm and in place as you carry on your drilling. Wall anchors are an excellent choice for vertical and highly angulated surfaces.
Regardless of the choice you make, ensure you add extra safety chains to reduce the chance of slipping.
4. Choosing the Right Drill Bit
Diamond-tipped bits are the standard choice for concrete core drills. These diamond bits work best with your specific concrete job, as they are reliably suited to the hardness of the specific aggregate material that makes up the targeted concrete surface.
When drilling through a tough surface, a bit with a soft bond is usually selected. When the surface is soft, the bit with the harder bond is chosen.
5. Prioritize Safety
Precautionary actions and safety gear must be made a priority. Ensure that the staff operating the drill are wearing goggles, earplugs, gloves and have the right drill and bit for the project.
Depending on the work environment, ensure all safety precautions are taken. The immediate priority is to prevent injuries and accidents. Ensure you choose a concrete drilling company that pays attention to these precautions when undertaking your project.
